Walk 1: VILLAGE HISTORY TRAIL
From the map plinth head past the post office and then, on your right:
The former Reading Room –. Converted into a furniture warehouse in 2010.
Cross over Bernard Lane and continue up to:
St Thomas’s Church – built in 1874 as a ‘chapel of ease’ along with the primary school behind it.
Cross over the main road (York Road) and walk back the way you came, on your right passing:
Naworth House – formerly the second home of Hughlings Jackson (1835-1911), the “father of English neurology” who made a particular contribution to the understanding of epilepsy.   Cross over New Lane to pass:
The Bay Horse Inn – built before 1848.
Turn right down Back Lane. Go past Hill Farm and follow lane round to the left to bring you to the bottom of The Green. Here turn right and walk past a large pink house and Cherry Tree Cottage. Just after that on the left is:
An entrance pillar to Green Hammerton Hall – the former seat of the Lord of the Manor which was demolished in 1952. Only the stable block (now part of the Main Pine shop, entrance further down) and the pillars remain. The other pillar stands in Helenfield.
Retrace your steps to walk up the green. On your right is:
St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Chapel – built in 1791 and curiously semi-detached to Watt House.
Further up on the left is:
Green Farm House – one of the oldest buildings in the village dating from the 1790s in common with Croft Cottage and Butts Cottage on the north side of the Boroughbridge Road.
